Recirculating water features rely on the right reservoir volume, pump performance, pipe sizing, intake, filtration, overflow, electrical supply, and control. Components should be selected for the desired flow and kept accessible.
Pondless systems remove an exposed pond but still contain stored water below the surface. Open ponds, deeper basins, fish, and features near pools introduce different safety, water-quality, enclosure, and maintenance questions.

What is a pondless water feature?
Water flows over a fall, fountain, or stream and returns through stone or grating into a concealed reservoir before being pumped back to the top. It avoids a visible open pond but still requires stored water, equipment, access, overflow, and maintenance.
How much maintenance does a water feature need?
Care varies with trees, sun, water temperature, flow, reservoir, filtration, splash, algae, wildlife, water quality, and season. Typical work includes checking water level and flow, removing debris, cleaning intake or filters, inspecting leaks, and winter procedures.
Can a water feature run through winter?
That depends on the system, pump, plumbing, reservoir, depth, ice, splash, make-up water, electrical use, manufacturer guidance, and whether safe access can be maintained. Many residential features are shut down and winterized.
Will a water feature attract mosquitoes?
Moving, circulated water is generally less attractive for breeding than stagnant water, but hidden pockets, blocked areas, containers, covers, and a system left off can hold still water. Flow, cleaning, drainage, and routine inspection matter.
Can a water feature help with drainage?
A decorative recirculating feature is not automatically a stormwater system. Roof and surface runoff, reservoir overflow, soil, groundwater, property drainage, neighbours, and municipal requirements must be considered separately before combining functions.
