A retaining wall resists lateral earth pressure and creates a change in grade. Its design changes when there is a driveway, pool, slope, fence, building, patio, equipment, tree, or other surcharge near the top; when groundwater or downspouts reach the wall; and when the foundation soil is weak, disturbed, or sloped.

Design Foundation, Drainage, Reinforcement, and Surcharge

Segmental retaining wall systems may work as gravity walls or as reinforced-soil structures using geogrid. The appropriate design depends on wall geometry, soil properties, slopes, groundwater, drainage, and loads above and below the wall.

Site and Structural Inputs

  • Measure exposed and total height, wall length, tiers, curves, steps, slopes, and property constraints.
  • Identify soil, foundation bearing, groundwater, downspouts, drainage outlets, and erosion paths.
  • Account for buildings, driveways, pools, fences, trees, patios, equipment, and live loads near the wall.
  • Determine permit, guard, engineering, utility, ravine, conservation, and property-line requirements.

Wall System and Construction

  • Prepare competent foundation soil and a level compacted base suited to the specified wall.
  • Install units, setback or batter, drainage aggregate, filter details, and outlets as designed.
  • Use specified geogrid type, length, spacing, orientation, coverage, and reinforced fill where required.
  • Compact carefully, manage water above and behind the wall, finish caps, and protect adjacent work.

Retaining Wall or Garden Wall?

Both may use similar-looking units, but holding back soil and supporting loads creates a different level of responsibility.

Retaining Wall

  • Resists soil pressure and establishes a change in grade.
  • Design depends on height, slopes, soils, drainage, geometry, and nearby surcharge.
  • May require geogrid, engineered fill, drainage, guard, engineering, and permits.
  • Failure can affect structures, neighbouring property, access, utilities, or people below.
  • Product choice must be compatible with the required structural system.

Best fit: grade changes where soil is being retained and structural conditions are properly reviewed.

Freestanding or Garden Wall

  • Primarily defines space, edges a bed, provides seating, or creates a low decorative feature.
  • May retain little or no meaningful soil pressure.
  • Still needs a stable base, sound units, caps, drainage awareness, and winter durability.
  • Can often use products or details not intended for structural retaining applications.
  • Should not be substituted for a retaining wall simply because the face looks similar.

Best fit: low landscape features whose purpose and loads remain decorative rather than structural.

Structural Questions Before You Choose a Wall

The visible block is important, but the soil, water, reinforcement, loads, and approvals behind it define the project.

Ask About Your Retaining Wall
Cost depends on wall height and length, tiers, curves, access, excavation, disposal, foundation soil, base, block system, caps, drainage, outlets, geogrid, reinforced fill, compaction, nearby loads, engineering, permits, guards, steps, lighting, planting, and restoration. A site review is needed for a meaningful estimate.
Engineering may be appropriate based on total and exposed height, tiering, slopes, soil, groundwater, property lines, structures, pools, driveways, fences, traffic, or other surcharge near the wall. Manufacturer charts and generic rules are not a substitute for site-specific design when the consequences or conditions warrant professional review.
Water must be managed above, behind, below, and around the wall. The design may include surface grading, swales, drainage aggregate, filters, pipe, outlets, and control of downspouts or groundwater. A pipe behind the wall is not a complete plan and should not be expected to handle uncontrolled site drainage alone.
Geogrid is a high-tensile geosynthetic reinforcement placed in designed layers between wall units and extended into compacted reinforced soil. It increases the effective mass and stability of the system. Type, strength, length, spacing, orientation, coverage, and fill are design decisions, not interchangeable site guesses.
Possible causes include inadequate foundation preparation, poor drainage, hydrostatic pressure, insufficient reinforcement, weak or poorly compacted fill, incorrect unit setback, surcharge, global slope movement, erosion, freeze-thaw effects, construction damage, or a system used beyond its design. Diagnosis should consider the entire wall and site.
Potentially, but those features add loads, penetrations, access, and safety requirements that must be included in the wall and site design. Fence posts should not be installed casually through geogrid or near the face, and a pool, driveway, building, or large structure can significantly change engineering and setback requirements.
Toronto property standards state that a retaining wall exceeding 1,000 mm in exposed height must be protected by a guard on open sides where access is provided at the top. Building Code and project-specific requirements may also apply. Guard loads and attachment should be coordinated with the wall design.
A building permit may be required depending on height, location, what the wall supports, nearby structures, and other conditions. Zoning, grading, right-of-way, tree, ravine, conservation, utility, and property-line requirements may also apply. Toronto Building should be consulted before construction.
There is no universal lifespan. Design, product, soil, drainage, foundation, reinforcement, compaction, water exposure, salt, vegetation, construction, nearby changes, and maintenance all influence performance. A structural wall should be periodically observed for movement, erosion, blocked outlets, settlement, and changes above or below it.
